Drove into Rhode Island today and visited Newport, which is a lot different than the Newport I’m used to. Newport is the place where the wealthy like the Asters and Vanderbilts had their vacation ‘cottages’ built. Newport is a college town and so it’s really easy to walk around and very visitor friendly, but the money in this area is out of this world. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such opulence and wealth in one place. The mansions were one thing, I expected them to be obscenely huge, but the privately owned residences were massive as well, and I’m talking 20,000 sq feet at least, just crazy.
We drove the shore route and saw some beautiful views of the ocean as well as more ginormous houses, and we stopped at a state park to stretch our legs along the way.
We also stopped at Fort Adams for a bathroom break and there was a game of rugby going on. I’m not sure who was playing, two college teams, but I had forgotten how much I missed watching the game, it’s just not the same on tv. We stayed for a little while and watched until the final whistle blew, I even had to yell at them a little as the one teams tackling was atrocious. I’m definitely going to have to go watch some games next year when we go home.

Mike: Yell a little? The ref had to come over and settle her down. Once he discovered she was Welsh that explained everything.
