Got up early this morning and took a drive up through Cape Cod. It was a beautiful drive on the way up the cape to Provincetown, we took the southern road and drove through lots of towns. The lower and mid cape was nothing like I thought it would be, nothing like I had pictured. There were lots of houses and shopping areas, it was like every other town really. I was expecting it to be very beachy and the houses to be more remote and individual. It did get to be more like I had imagined as we got further north to the upper cape.
We stopped at Highland Beach and had a walk along the ocean. This particular beach was very quite and not very touristy which was great. It really was beautiful and the ocean was awesome. The sand here is different than in San Diego though, it’s very course and the beach is difficult to walk on as the sand is deep and loose; it’s easy to see how the dunes form here. Tal-y wore herself out really quickly which was cool. After a walk we headed to the end of the cape. We stopped at another beach, Herring Cove Point, but there were too many people and not much beach as the tide was in. So we headed into Provincetown; wow, talk about crowded this place is crazy even now at the end of the season, it’s probably difficult to move during the peak season. It is a nice town, very tourist oriented but well taken care of with some lovely houses and cute little shops. It’s the kind of town where you either walk or bicycle everywhere because driving and parking is difficult.
We drove back home along the north shore of the cape although the roads here are not really shore routes as it’s almost impossible to see the ocean most of the time from the main roads. Mike tells me the drive home was okay, I have no opinion as I slept almost the whole way.
As we pulled back into the campsite a giant lorry was leaving laden down with cranberries. I guess while we were gone they sucked them all out of the bog. There were tons of them in the lorry that left, and there were at least three loads taken away; we must eat a lot of cranberries in this country.
Mike: The cape is nice but not special! I had a nice quiet drive home!
