We headed north this morning to Crescent City which is about 20 miles north of Klamath; our first stop was at the info center in the city to figure out where we wanted to visit while we are here. After talking to the park info lady, and the general tourist info guy we had more of an idea what's in this area and where we wanted to go. We spent a little time in Crescent City proper and visited the Battery Point lighthouse there which was first lit on December 10, 1856 and today is a private aid to navigation.
Then, on the recommendation of the ranger at the Redwood National and State Parks info office we visited the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and took the Howland Hill Road through the park. This scenic drive is spectacular, one of the coolest drives we've taken for sure. The road was one car wide and really windy but it is lined with some of the tallest trees I've ever seen. These redwoods may not be as big around as the Sequoias, but they are definitely taller by close to 100 ft. They can reach to almost 400 ft and be as old as 2,000 years, and they are amazing to see. I took lots of photos but they don't really do them justice as it's hard fitting close to 400 feet in a photograph! We drove through the park around 10 miles, stopping often to pass other cars and just to gaze at the trees. About half way through we stopped at Stout Grove and spent a good while walking the trails among the trees, feeling very, very small.
Mike: Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We finished the loop and ended up at Hiouchi before driving back into Crescent City. Just south of CC we took a little detour to the Crescent Beach overlook to check out the ocean and we saw something in the water that wasn't a whale but was definitely something. Neither one of us could figure out what it was even though we spent ages trying to figure it out. Besides the creature the view once again was amazing.

On the way back to Klamath we took one more detour up to the Klamath River overlook but it we got so far up that the fog hid the river completely. But it was ok, as when we got back to the camp ground the sun was shining and the river was right there!
